Act I: Michael Cottam solves a real estate problem with technology

A few years ago, Michael Cottam decided to sell his resort-area home. He found that MLS and the big national real estate agencies did poor quality online brochures for houses, using mostly small photos, the occasional video, and very few virtual tours.

Michael’s company Visual Itineraries builds online brochures for hotels, complete with high-resolution photos, virtual tours, maps, Google Street Views, video, etc. — all mobile-friendly, with super-fast page load times, and – behind the curtain – all the underpinnings like schema markup so that Google can really understand what the page is about. Michael’s extensive experience working on the Portland MLS, and doing SEO and online marketing for real estate sites, made him realize that much of what he’d built for his travel website was precisely what was needed for marketing houses for sale.

He repurposed the content management software from his travel site to make a standalone website for his house for sale. He did a little online marketing and SEO, and his real estate agent quickly sold the property for 46% more than Michael paid for it three years prior. Along the way, he identified the logistics problems every realtor has in trying to get a client’s house ready for the MLS and developed a workflow to manage those tricky details. Hmmm. Michael thought this might be a nice idea for a new company… and promptly filed the idea away.
